Graphic Tool Helps Security Leaders Track Competencies, Advance Leadership

February 15, 2024 – A new graphic released by the Security Executive Council (SEC) will help corporate security leaders and their teams identify skills gaps and track their progress toward Next Generation Security leadership.

The Next Generation Security Leader graphic, version 2, maps out six categories of skills significant to security leadership success and invites security teams to check off skill sets they’ve attained so they can focus on mastery in other critical areas. The content draws upon SEC research into the traditional career backgrounds of corporate security leaders and the competencies required and valued in today’s corporate security environment.

The first iteration of the Next Generation Security Leader graphic was released in 2007. While the same six knowledge streams apply today, this new version recognizes a greater shift toward cross-functional knowhow and collaboration, executive-level business performance, and team leadership.

“Not only have the private sector risks and challenges changed, so have the skills needed for private sector leaders,” said Bob Hayes, Managing Director of the SEC. “It’s a great starting point to discuss your department’s needs or for your professional development.”

The graphic is now freely available to the security community.
