“Today’s security executives are busier than ever safeguarding their organization’s people, products, property and information. The threats, vulnerabilities and responsibilities are growing faster than CSOs’ resources, budgets and capabilities. They just don’t have the bandwidth to keep recreating the wheel while developing new solutions,” says Bob Hayes, general manager of the CSO Executive Council, and CSO of CXO Media/IDG. Hayes continues, “The council allows security executives to come together, in a trusted, collaborative and virtual environment, and take the idea of public-private partnerships to the next level. These members are not only sharing ideas and practices, but developing tools and models to tackle major problems and make each others’ jobs a whole lot easier as well as less costly and time consuming.”
Council members participate in task forces organized under four strategic priorities: Risk Management, Business Continuity, Leadership Management and Value Equation. A Metrics task force within the Value Equation area recently produced an innovative and comprehensive model for evaluating the cost of complying with five of the new security laws and regulations enacted since 9/11.
“The nation’s security chiefs are being called to secure our country’s physical and cyber assets, marking a period of unprecedented pressure,” says Walter Manninen, President and CEO of CXO Media. “We worked side by side with CSOs and CISOs to develop this unique and elite organization. They told us they needed a closed, trusted environment to share their knowledge and lessons learned, plus a support system to produce new tools to save them time and money. The council is realizing this vision.”
The council’s Board of Advisors is a distinguished and experienced group of leading security executives who advise the management of the organization on emerging and pertinent industry issues. Members include:
James Ashby, Boise Cascade
Michael Assante, American Electric Power
Randy Arnt, Kimberly-Clark
Lee Baca, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department

The council is also supported by a group of former CSOs who are leading security experts. This group—called the CSO Emeritus Faculty—serves as content experts, conducting research and creating models, tools and techniques for delivery to council members. Founding faculty include:

The CSO Executive Council’s initiatives are planned and guided by leaders elected from its membership. Members create the council’s agenda and priorities and are supported by the CSO Emeritus Faculty as well as the council’s 20+ professional staff who handles tactical, operational and administrative tasks. Members are granted private access to a secure, commercial free, members-only web site, which includes a progressive online format for solving problems and a secured database directory of resources and staff. In addition to directing the development of new solutions, members can download reports, case studies and research, and post secure information of benefit to other members. Annual membership costs $17,500 and enables CSOs and CISOs to enroll executive members of their staff and others who may participate on their behalf. Enterprise-wide memberships are also available. This is the second fee-based organization for corporate officers launched by CXO Media. Last April, the company launched a similar program for chief information officers (CIOs).
